Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a causing a quiet revolution in therapeutic work. After 20 years working as a Clinical Psychologist I met this way of working, it had a big impact on me and it is now my main therapeutic tool. Using this approach, you are guided by the therapist to understand, perhaps for the first time, that it is normal to have mixed feelings about things, that each different part of you is valuable and has an important message that needs to be heard. Once any of us start to meet, hear and witness the different parts of us using IFS… something beautiful happens: our compassionate, curious, calm nature appears, like the sun coming out from behind the clouds in our mind. This experience is universal and all we need is the skills to navigate how to access this. Once we get to know our true selves, we learn a life-long skill in being able to take care of our vulnerable parts ~ in real time, when we are out and about in our lives, and far beyond the therapy. This is a therapy that causes real inward and lasting change. The therapists themselves are active practitioners in IFS and all have lived experience of using it day to day.

Therapy can treat functional symptoms. I want to say to healthcare services “Don’t push people away; you can treat them.” CP
